Whats the difference between British Isles, Great Britain and United Kingdom?

The full name of our country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Therefore, the UK would the more accurate shortened version as GB would not include NI. The British Isles is a geographical term which includes the whole of the island of Ireland, I believe.
