Body Building: This is perhaps the best known, a physique based competition where competitors focus on developing all of the muscles proportionally (symmetrically) and minimizing body fat. Muscular development is reached with weight training programs, although there is no weight lifted in this competition. Powerlifting: Competitions include three events – the squat, bench press, and dead lift. These are based on the use of free weights. Competitors have three attempts in each of these events and the heaviest lift of each event is added to determine the lifter’s “total”. The highest total wins the competition. Weightlifting: Lifters perform two types of lifts the snatch and the clean-and-jerk. In the snatch, they lift the bar to arms length above their head in one movement.
