Whats the difference between “asphyxiation” and “suffocation”?

Asphyxiation is a severe deficient supply of oxygen to the body that arises from abnormal breathing.  Its typically when your lungs cannot provide enough oxygen.  (When oxygen goes below 15% it can cause problems)  Whenever you have Asphyxiation its because a person cannot acquire sufficient oxygen through breathing.  This can happen for many reasons including when something such as carbon dioxide interferes with the oxygen supply.  An example of asphyxia is choking.

Suffocation is when the air supply is blocked from entering the body.  It can occur from smothering or other means.  Technically though suffocation results in the process of Asphyxia happening.

Asphyxiation can occur when a substance, such as carbon dioxide, interferes with the oxygenization of tissue. Suffocation can occur when the air supply to the body is blocked from entering the body. Unfortunately, the results can be the same – death.
