Originally it was the same language, but the Dutch had a rapid evolution while Afrikaans was more stable and kept the characters of the old language, with German an local influences. It is the primary language used by two related ethnic groups in South Africa: the Afrikaans people (Afrikaners) and the Coloured. Afrikaans and Dutch are largely mutually intelligible.
