What’s the difference between a psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, and social worker?
“Psychotherapist” is a job title. It refers to someone who practices the profession of psychotherapy with individuals, couples, families, children, and/or groups. A psychotherapist may be trained as a social worker, a psychologist, a psychiatrist, or a counselor. Someone with a degree in social work may have any number of different jobs: casemanager, hospital discharge planner, school social worker, or psychotherapist. A psychologist may administer psychological testing, act as a consultant for an organization, or be a psychotherapist. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who administers psychotropic medications, and some psychiatrists also practice psychotherapy. In my case, I am a social worker who practices psychotherapy.
