Basically it is the amount of pipes connected to a radiator. One pipe steam system will have one pipe connected to the radiator and two pipe system will have two pipes connected to a radiator. The two pipe systems will normally have what we call traps connected to the return side of the radiator also. See a one pipe steam system.
