Whats the difference between a kill and no-kill shelter?
Every SPCA throughout the United States is individually operated and most are not associated with one another. Some are no-kill shelters and other SPCAs practice euthanasia. The difference between a “kill” and “no-kill” shelter is that a no-kill shelter has employed a policy not to euthanize any animal based on age, “adoptability” or space restrictions. So-called “kill shelters” on the other hand have employed a policy that allows them to practice humane euthanasia when they deem it necessary. Each shelter’s euthanasia policies are set by their individual Board of Directors. Our organization has no direct influence over local SPCA’s policy choices in this area, however SPCA International does encourage all shelters and rescue groups to strive to be no-kill. If you are concerned about the moral issues surrounding euthanisia, you are not alone.
