They are all the same kind of storm, “tropical cyclones.” In the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and east of the International Date Line in the northern Pacific, they are called “hurricanes.” West of the Date Line in the northern Pacific they are called “typhoons.” In other parts of the world they are just called “tropical cyclones.” Our Tropical cyclone and hurricane glossary has more information.
