Whats the difference between a folder and a directory?

A directory is a repository for separate files. A folder in Pine is not really a directory; each folder is a file which can contain one or more messages. For instance, when you save a new message to a ‘joemail’ folder, the new message is appended to the joemail folder/file as a separate entry in the file. When you list the folders and select the joemail folder, Pine displays the individual messages in the folder/file and allows you to delete or otherwise work with them.

*Sadly, we had to bring back ads too. Hopefully more targeted.
