What’s the deal with exams?

You’ll have exams in December, but LPPE is the only one that’s final. All the others are “failsafe” exams – at most, they’ll be worth 20% of your final grade, and they’ll only count if you do better in December than you do on your April exam. If you do better in April, that’s 100% of your mark. Exams are almost always open book, meaning you can bring in your notes. Exceptions to this were Section I Contracts and Section II Torts last year – whether the exam is open book is at the professor’s discretion. Failsafe December exams are one hour long. The LPPE exam is two hours long. In terms of content, professors will usually give you a short scenario (called a “fact pattern”) and then ask you to analyze the legal issues arising from it. Sometimes they might give you an essay question instead of, or in addition to, the fact pattern. The Bora Laskin Law Library has copies of old exams available online, so you won’t be going in blind – there will be plenty of opportunities to practise. Profe
