Whats the correlation between U.S. and European weather patterns?
I was once told if you want to know what the weather will be like here, then look at what it was like in Europe last week. A: Because of the inherent changeability of the atmosphere, there is no direct correlation between weather in the USA and the weather in Europe. That is to say, a snowstorm in Europe today does not mean a snowstorm in the USA next week. However, the planetary wave pattern that produces ridges and troughs in the jet stream can connect the weather between distant locations. Often, a ridge in the jet stream over the western USA can produce a trough downstream over the East. This can result in warm and dry weather for the West and cool, stormy conditions in the East. Farther downstream and across the Atlantic, the jet stream will continue to twist and turn, affecting Europe’s weather. This planetary wave pattern is not stationary. Typically it progresses slowly west-to-east. However, it can sometimes become stationary or “blocked.” It occasionally moves from east-to-we
