To paraphrase Mark Twain, rumors of DEI’s demise because of Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s impending departure to Hendrick Motorsports now appear greatly exaggerated. Any concerns DEI would collapse without Earnhardt as its marquee driver have given way to immediate expectations of contending in this year’s Chase for the Nextel Cup. Earnhardt (12th) and Martin Truex Jr. (11th) now have backup from veteran Mark Martin.
