Whats the big deal with garbage cans being put out the night before pickup?
Two reasons: Eagle Crossing residents have a seasonal problem with roaming bears. As they come out of hibernation, they are hungry and looking for an easy meal. When they are getting ready to go into hibernation, they are eating to put as much fat on as they can. Accessible garbage is an easy target and bears learn quickly where to find food. Bears also have a keen sense of smell and what smells bad to us may be a gourmet meal for them. Putting the trash cans out of sight is also an aesthetics issue. The rule is enforced year around to avoid a “trashy” appearance. The association board of directors adopted a house rule that garbage cans be put out no earlier than 4 AM on the morning of pickup and they be replaced in their secure storage area prior to midnight. If a bear gets into your garbage and it’s reported to officials, they will fine you $100. While our assessment is less, it is designed to bring compliance so the state officials can focus on other needs.
