Whats the best wine with lamb?
Personally I think there are two basic ways of pairing wine and food – either they should be similar or provide a good contrast. I am usually a much bigger fan of similar flavors. Given that, here’s how I would look at lamb – it leans a little towards the gamey side, so think about a gamey wine. You pretty much have to go old world to find one – something that would be described as gamey, barnyard, leather, meaty. The previously mentioned Syrah would be good, but it would be really good if it were a French Syrah – like a Northern Rhone. Note: this is just for lamb in general. The additions of sauces and seasonings can change things.
