Whats the best way to stop a food allergy (immediate or delayed, but NOT anaphylactic shock) reaction?
Please note that the allergic reaction will probably not stop until the allergen is out of your body. Most antihistamines only work for 4 to 6 hours and to control the allergic reaction have to be repeated until the allergen is out of the body. If you are an adult or over 12 years of age take one 50mg Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) capsule or 4 teaspoonfuls of the liquid every 4 to 6 hours until rash free for 24 hours. Other antihistamines can be used in place of Benadryl but may not work as well. A cool bath with Corn Starch or Aveeno may help. Since allergic rashes are often spread over most of the body Hydrocortisone Cream or Ointment SHOULD NOT be used unless suggested by your doctor. A treatment for six days with a Cortisone Dospak may be prescribed by your doctor if the rash has been controlled in 12-18 hours. If you have chronic allergic reactions to foods your doctor may want you to have a Dospak on hand and start taking it immediately. If breathing problems occur or if you have pr
Benadryl helps some people as does Zyrtec (perscription), which is what I take. There are other things on the market too. Zyrtec is typically a pill, but my Dr has given me a bottle of liquid form, which can be absorbed more quickly (I vomit, so it’s hard to take the medicine if it’s just going to come right back up), though I do take the pill form on a regular basis – the liquid is just for emergencies in my case. You don’t really say what your reaction is: Hives, rash, etc. Kind of hard to decern what “home remedies” might be helpful if you don’t say what the reaction is. I would go to an allergist. Mine has put me on allergy shots. Essentially they take what you are allergic to and give it to you in tiny tiny doses. Slowly, over time, they increase the dosage. It doesn’t always work but when it does, it can completely cure you of your allergy. Shots typically start out twice a week, then go to once a week, then every other week, then every 3rd week, and finally every 4th week. You c
