Whats the best way to free up memory on my hard drive?

Apart from the obvious (deleting excess files and uninstalling unneccessary software) there are a few other measures you can take. If you have a windows machine and ‘hibernate’ is enabled but you don’t use it, you can free up a significant percentage of the drive (several gigs) by disabling it (control panel > power options). Video files tend to be very big, try doing a search of all drives (including hidden files and system folders) for video files and delete what you don’t want. If you know what your doing, you can also reduce the size of the pagefile and disable system restore, or reduce the space reserved for it. Defragmenting your drive won’t generally free up much space unless it’s extremely fragmented. That only reduces seek times, and makes read/writes a little faster. Folks seem to put a lot more importance on it than they really should, because the difference is usually very slight.
