Whats the best way to cook chestnuts?

Place the pierced nuts on a cookie sheet or a shallow pan and roast in a 425 degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes. Our ancestors did this on a pan over an open fire but, until they learned to prick the skins, it was a pretty hazardous pastime, even if they did lay bets on whose might pop first. BOILED CHESTNUTS: Pierce chestnuts, cover with water and boil until soft in center.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Yes, you should put an incision in the skins to let the steam out. If you have an open fire, you can buy a chestnut roasting pan. This has holes in the base and a lid. They normally come with a stand so you can position it over the fire. You still need to cut the skins.

You can completely peel them and boil them or cut the outer skin/shell half way down and either roast or grill (Grill = Broil if you’re in the USA)
