Whats the best way to clean the keys of a piano?
You should only use a LIGHTLY DAMP cloth to clean your keys. Any disinfectants, sprays, or even a wet rag could cause big problems. Cleaners are bad because they can easily remove the shiny finish to your keys, or do other surface damage. But here’s the big thing: Any moisture (even just plain water) getting between the keys can do the following damage: • Moisten the felt. There is a layer of felt under the keys that MUST NOT get wet – if it does it’ll change the quality of the felt, and your piano won’t sound right. Any dripping moisture is going to reach that felt. Replacing damaged felt is a MUST to get your piano sounding right again and it costs BIG BUCKS. • Rust the strings. Even a little water will severely rust piano strings. • Warp the wood. In many pianos, the keys are made of wood with a protective finish on top, but exposed wood underneath. If that gets wet, it’ll warp. And then you have big problems.
