Whether you’re trying to snag dinner or just enjoying a little freshwater catch-and-release, you want your cast to be on target and invisible to the fish. “You’re trying to make the lure look like real food that’s just floating there in front of it,” says Robert Kramer, president of the International Game Fish Association. Here’s how to ring the dinner bell. Check your tackle. Make sure you have the ideal amount of line — the spool should be filled to an eighth of an inch from its lip. “Any more will create drag as the line comes off the spool, throwing off your cast,” says Kramer. Also, the weight of the rod and reel should match your lure — a heavy rod should get a heavy lure, for example. 1. Assume the position.
