What’s the best way to build a quintessential rock music collection?
One good place to start is with The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, as compiled by Rolling Stone. When I was with the magazine, I actually voted on the selections for this list. These lists are compiled by a lot of music critics, musicians, and people in the industry and are as authoritative a source as any. You can also read books, see what appeals to you, and build from there. It’s really a great time to be collecting. Collections and compilations have gotten better and better in breadth, depth, content, and quality. They’ve been remastering music since CDs were introduced in the early 1980s, and there are phenomenal deals to be had. Pound for pound, it’s the cheapest that music has ever been. Rock is a great umbrella encompassing half a century of music, including everything from blues to electronic music to classic rock, psychedelia, British Invasion, New Wave, punk rock, and indie rock.
