I’m a doll artist. My one of a kind Barbie dolls have been in the October 2004 issue of Barbie Bazaar magazine, and my Obitsu dolls are on the covers of the “Pretty Little Liars” series of books. You HAVE to use acrylic paint. Using oil paints will cause the vinyl to deteriorate over time, and using any kind of enamel (including spraypaint) will just cause tackiness because the paint will never dry. Many doll artists agree that the best and most easiest paints to use are Golden Fluid Acrylics, and then you’ll also want to use a very small paintbrush (I like the Loew Cornielle miniature brushes in size 18/0). Remember, always thin your paint before painting your doll. Five or six thin layers is much better than one thick, goopy layer, even though it’s more time consuming to paint in layers. You’re going for a factory look, and as such, you never want to show any brushstrokes. Golden and Liquitex make some very nice sealers.
