Most guides from major travel publishers (Frommers, Fodors, Lonely Planet, etc) will provide information on the major attractions, standard lodgings, etc. Depending on how much time you will spend, and what you wish to see, you might wish to purchase a pass from Historic Scotland, which allows entry into Edinburgh Castle, among other sites. One book that we found very helpful for all sorts of “insider” tips around Scotland was “Scotland the Best” by Peter Irvine. Much more detail and better information than the generic tour books.
