I would start off with simply painting the base color of the trunk (brown) in the shape that you want it. Then after that dries, think of -or observe the other shadows, highlights, and other hues on the tree trunk. Then mix the paint to make those colors, and paint them where they go, dont forget to blend! Then when that has dried, take a small brush to make the dark brown details of the bark. You should do this last, because its the most noticable and bold thing on the trunk, but you can also add very fine details to that too, if you have enough room on the canvas. Good luck!
