Curtis Institute of Music is by far the best, and the hardest to get into to. (Philly, PA) Acceptance is like 6.5% In NYC, you have Juilliard (of course), the Manhattan School for Music, and the Mannes School of Music. NYU is better for graduates. (I hear Yale is giving all music graduates full scholarship, you might want to keep that in mind. They have a great department!) Stony Brook on long island has Midori, the Emerson Quartet in residence, as well as the Kavifans! Don’t know how easy it is to study with them though. Boston- New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory Maryland- Peabody Don’t know if this still counts as ‘east’, but I hear Jaime Laredo is on faculty at Indiana University! The Cleveland Institute of Music in Ohio is quite good with a fantastic faculty. Not on the East coast though.
