Whats the best kind and amount of hay to feed my rabbit?
A. All rabbits need unlimited grass hay available at all times. The hay helps to keep the teeth worn down and the gastrointestinal system moving, as rabbits do not vomit (they can’t eliminate hair like a cat). Grass hay can be timothy, orchard grass, bermuda grass or oat hay. Alfalfa hay is not appropriate for unlimited feeding because it contains too much protein and calcium, but occasionally treats of alfalfa – a small handful once or twice a week – is all right. If your rabbit is not eating much hay, experiment with different kinds until you find one that it enjoys. Sometimes rabbits will reject the small bales of pet store hay but will eat fresh hay. It is also cheaper to buy hay by the bale if you can store it. If not, you can ask people who own horses to give you a little at a time, or you can ask at a feed store if they will sell you a flake or two from a bale.
