You are exerting a great deal of energy whether you know it or not while you work out. The same is true while you are digesting a meal. So, ideally you don’t want to be doing both at the same time. Avoid large, heavy meals prior to a work-out. A complex carbohydrate two hours before your work-out with a piece of fruit maybe fifteen minutes prior is a good choice. Water, water, water all day long including during your work-out.
