You don’t really need a book. Use the internet. There are two books I haven’t read called Altered Books 101 and 202(those are the approximate names. can be found at Michaels). There are just so many ways to do things and things to do to a book. I got one from my library by Terry Taylor but I wouldn’t consider it comprehensive. He has been altering things for years. I’ve used several of his techniques. You can also search the internet. I found one website that has lots of info about starting the book. In my experience (I’ve completed three books and am working on two others), It is imperative to find a book with a good binding. Don’t use an old book. I’m about to experiment with a textbook. Board books are good because you don’t have to rip or glue pages. Reader’s Digest condensed books are a dime a dozen and the spines are decent. Start by taking pages out.
