Whats the background for development of Ceramic based hip joint Prostheses ?
Ceramic based Hip Joint Prostheses have gained wide popularity all over the world since its introduction in 1970. Initially alumina based hip implants were used in France and Germany but now almost all advanced countries use Ceramic based hip joints. In India most of these Prostheses are made out of stainless steel. Main disadvantage of metallic Prostheses are their bio-degradation with time due to mechanical wear or chemical disintegration and as a result requiring to be retrieved and replaced by a new set every ten to twelve years. Alumina based hip joint, developed by CGCRI, has adequate mechanical, chemical and tribological properties as specified by ISO for similar applications and give a much longer trouble free life. In India, this imported Prostheses is available at exorbitant price and thus only a handful of people can afford the same.
