Whats the art of bell ringing called?
Bell-ringers just call themselves bell-ringers. They do not like being called campanologists! There are different sorts of bell ringing – usually either tower bells or on hand bells. Tower bells are usually in churches, but there are some ‘secular’ towers, such as a very fine ring of twelve bells in Manchester Town Hall. Usually, ringing in towers is ‘change ringing’ where the bells are rung in constantly changing sequences called ‘methods’. Ringing on handbells can be either changes or tunes. You can’t ring tunes on tower bells because you can’t easily change the speed at which the bells strike.
