Whats the “Alphaville” mentioned in “New York”?
I’m betting that Alphaville is representing “Alphabet City.” The East Village is known as Alphabet City, that’s where Avenues A,B,C, and D are located, along with the lower numbers of streets. [DGH] I think “Alphaville” is a reference to a movie of the same name. On p. 153 of the book Into the Heart by Niall Stokes, it says: “One of the films that influenced [U2] greatly was Jean Luc Godard’s Alphaville. ‘It’s a look at modern architecture,’ Bono states.
