Whats so peculiar with the lyrics of “Leaving on a Jet Plane” to musicians?
Especially in the area of folk music, my parents would play their guitars, and while enduring yet another prolonged electrical blackout in some foreign country of undeveloped nature, we would sing “Lemon Tree,” “If I had a Hammer,” “Rocky Road,” “Go Tell it on the Mountain,” and of course, “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Puff the Magic Dragon” and “Leaving on a Jet Plane.” To this day, the melodies and lyrics are ingrained as part of joyful childhood memories and as a coda to a simpler time. Perhaps the most worrying predicable song lyric also has to come from poor old John Denver, who warbled on about leaving on a jet plane and not knowing when he’d be back again.
