Whats so bad about being considered “romantic”?
Leonel: Because there’s a certain amount of prejudice with respect to the lyrics. If we were to sing more about social or political causes, or about poverty, then they might consider our music to be alternative. We like to transmit the message that there’s hope for love and hope for forgiveness, as well as a way in which to live life with happiness—that there’s light—and that, I believe, is also social in many ways. But because we’re always seen through the veil of couples and romance, our music is classified as pop. Sometimes the topic of love is seen as gaudy or cheap. In the future, we’d love to work with artists like Jarabe de Palo, Alejandro Sanz or Jorge Drexlerand we’ll continue seeking out those performers we like who express interest in collaborating with us. It’s possible that this stigma of being “too pop” might scare away some musicians who are considered more alternative.
