His anger and drama aside, Michael has raised a serious point of contention. When white editors are appointed, a stringent requirement is that they come from a strong journalism background. They not only need to have an academic publishing or journalism foundation, but must have extensive practical experience. This very rarely applies to when black female editors are appointed. I don’t mean to cast aspersions on the capabilities of these women, but have noticed a tendency to employ black females as ‘faces’ for magazines. Examples are Gerry Rantseli, former editor of Soul Magazine and Kgomotso Matsunyane current O Mag editor. Neither Gerry nor KG have the standard qualifications and background that are expected from their white counterparts. If practices and methodolgy were the same…surely Irene Bester, Amor Vittone or some other erstwhile televison celebrity or well known personality could have become the new Fairlady or Marie Clare editor… The publishing industry is largely domina
