One interesting point on the NY Times online technologies: as newspaper revenues continue to fall, the Times is spending over $10 million a year to develop online tools just for their own use. There in nothing here that they could not license from a company like ThePort Network or others for a fraction of the cost. Now they want to increase that spending to around $15 million annually by adding 30 more developers. I wonder if that is the smartest move during a time of such upheaval in the newspaper industry. The Times certainly does good work, but I question if this is the best approach. Heck, they could buy entire companies for that amount.
