Clearly, R. Kelly and Chris Brown have something in common. Same thing with Britney (Spears, on 2007’s Blackout album). I knew that she did not want to expose how she really felt on every single song. When I worked with her on Gimme More, she didn’t want to talk about what she was going through. So I said: ‘OK, let’s escape. Let’s have a party. This is also what people appreciate you for.’ So I think it’s kind of the same thing with (Kelly and Brown). They’re not going to give you their innermost feelings, and we don’t have to ask that of every artist. Q: So what kind of direction did you take with Brown and Kelly on their new projects?
