It can be very cold and windy working in the North Sea. You are partly right – the Norwegian sector is 2 weeks on, 3 weeks off but the British sector is 2 and 2. Work is generally in 12 hour shifts working back to back with another operator though extra hours also sometimes need to be put in. I worked on the rigs for 6 years as a mud logger (geologist). Initially, I found the work interesting but eventually found it a drudge and was pleased when I lost my job because of falls in the oil price some years ago. The geology can be quite boring; sandstone reservoirs with shale cap rock or limestone reservoirs with anhydrite cap rock. Work consisted of describing rock cuttings following analysis down a microscope, bagging up samples, checking for oil fluorescence using UV light, checking for gas through a gas detector and gas chromatograph together with certain other complex equipment.
