Whats it like working and almost living so closely with three other musicians?
The challenge of all the personal interaction is one of the things that I love most about playing in quartets and something that continues to fascinate me. It’s like a four-way marriage, and like a marriage it needs maintenance on a very regular basis. With a quartet you can’t really do anything by majority; if you have one person on stage who feels hard done by – as if they’ve been forced to do something that they don’t want to do – then it doesn’t work at all. There has to be consensus, so that everyone on stage is really committed to what they’re doing. That’s a real challenge with four strong musical personalities. Did you ever consider starting your own quartet from scratch? You can’t plan for the opportunity to join a quartet like the Takacs, and it wasn’t at all what I intended. But having met and played with the guys I knew I wanted to join. It’s one of those things that I would have spent the rest of my life wondering about. How would you describe the Takacs sound?
