Whats it like when girls first come in?
CYNTHIA: None of them really choose to come in on their own free will. Their first day at the farm is usually pretty rough, emotionally. They’re used to getting out of things they don’t want to do, and they find out misbehaving or being ugly to us is not going to make us kick them out. They’re usually kind of surprised at that. But pretty quickly they settle in because the other girls who have been there awhile have a positive attitude. I think that helps to make them feel secure. You said everyone on staff is polite, so I guess this isn’t a tough-love boot camp. It is tough love, but we really are not a boot camp. We have a rule at the farm that none of the staff are allowed to yell at the girls. You can make your point without going into a high-pitched scream. You can be very, very structured and very discipline-oriented, but you don’t have to yell. That’s a hard thing if you have a girl yelling at you, but you just learn you’re the adult.
