What’s it like in New Orleans?
As you probably know, the area immediately around Loyola was relatively unaffected by the worst of Hurricane Katrina, and the campus looks virtually unchanged from when you last saw it, though there is some rain-and-wind induced damage to the RecPlex. Driving through New Orleans toward the campus, however, you may well go past damaged buildings, dead vegetation, fallen or uprooted trees, and piles of debris. The city at large (outside of the Uptown area) is still in the long process of being cleaned up. Some formerly flooded areas will have an unpleasant smell but authorities have declared that the air is safe to breathe. Still, we strongly discourage walking around in such areas or “sightseeing” in areas that have experienced severe damage. Power and water service have been restored.
