What’s it all going to cost?
We estimate that from scratch (a full 360 points with no credit transfer), a BEng(Hons) will cost between £4000 and £5000 based on 2006 course fees. An MEng will add up to another £5000. For comparison, conventional universities in England will be charging £3000 per year from 2007, making the tuition cost for a four-year full-time MEng degree around £12000 at 2006 prices. The Sidney Perry Foundation offers studentships of up to £1600 to help students to complete a first degree in engineering. See the news page for details.
At the time of writing (March 2011), the effects of the Government’s radical shake-up of the way English universities are funded and of the systems of student support are still not clear – and that applies to all universities, not just the OU. It is pretty obvious that the OU’s fees will have to rise significantly, but that there is the prospect of student loans becoming available for the first time to part-time students (as they say, terms and conditions will apply). The Sidney Perry Foundation offers studentships of up to £3,000 (maximum of £1,500 in any one year) to help students to complete a first degree in engineering. The Comino Foundation has a limited number of Bailey-Comino scholarships, each for £1,000, on offer to T450, T802 and T885 students.
