What’s HIPAA?
HIPAA is an important acronym for health records and medical privacy. HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. HIPAA is composed of a complex set of rules and regulations. such as the HIPAA privacy rules and the HIPAA security rule, among others. Under authority granted by HIPAA, a federal law, the Secretary of Health and Human Services issued health privacy regulations that became effective in 2003. The Office of Civil Rights is the HHS agency responsible for the privacy rule.
