Whats happening with weed control?
Where farmers applied preemergence herbicides this spring, weed control is pretty good in the fields. However, farmers this year who are relying on total postemergence programs to control weeds, particularly in corn, are looking at fields that are a little rough and weedy right now. “We’ve also had some windy conditions, and you hate to see people out in the field spraying on those days,” says Owen. “I’m afraid some farmers and other applicators are going to rationalize that they need to go ahead and make those postemergence herbicide treatments. We may be hearing some drift complaints over the next week or so. We’re going to have to address the drift issue.” What else did the ISU area crop specialists report in their June 7 teleconference, regarding planting progress in Iowa? “With regard to soybeans, we’re finally finishing up the planting,” answers Owen. “Over the past couple weeks, we had 3% to 4% of the soybean acreage in Iowa that we couldn’t get planted due to the wet weather. H
