Whats happening with marine parks now?
In January 2010 the Minister for Environment and Conservation announced the formation of 13 Marine Park Local Advisory Groups (MPLAGs), to consider and advise the Government on zoning and management issues for the State’s 19 marine parks. In November 2010, at the MPLAGs’ third meeting, group members were given preliminary sanctuary zone scenarios as a starting point to help group members, other stakeholders and the wider community begin talking about how they would prefer to see marine parks zoned. The advice the Government receives on preferred zoning scenarios is likely to be very different from the preliminary scenarios. The Government has asked to receive this in the first half of 2011, when it will develop draft management plans with zoning prior to formal community consultation in the second half of 2011. It is expected that zoning will take effect in 2012. Until then, under the Marine Parks Act 2007 there will be no changes to what people can currently do in marine parks.
