What’s happening with Grandfather Rights?
Grandfather Rights have traditionally been a part of administering the zoning code in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. Although we have had an ordinance describing Grandfather Rights and follow a department-wide procedure, we do not have a procedure actually in the FNSB zoning code for determining Grandfather Rights. An ordinance was introduced by the Administration that incorporated a public process into the Grandfather Rights ordinance. There were other changes brought forward in the ordinance as well, some of which have been controversial and are discussed below. Based on comments from public meetings, the Administration has made changes to the original draft proposal. The new revised ordinance is also shown below. Attendees at public meetings requested that they have the opportunity to review the ordinance sufficiently before new public hearings are held.
