AORN Keynote: On August 22, Dr. Jack Barker was at the AORN Chapter 1004 Annual Keys Seminar to deliver the keynote address on “Adapting Aviation Safety Tools to Healthcare.” Jack discussed the growing relevance of using checklists and briefing cards to improve safety in all aspects of medicine. He highlighted a recent study published in the NEJM earlier this year which showed a significant decrease in deaths and complications when ORs instituted a 19-step checklist and, more importantly, were properly trained in its use. Additionally he provided the participants some effective communication tools that they could immediately use to improve patient safety.
