Whats going on with white poppies?
White poppies started being sold in 1933 by the Women’s Co-operative Guild who wanted to remember all those who have died in wars whilst simultaneously expressing opposition to war. They are now made by women who might otherwise have difficulty finding employment, and distributed by the Peace Pledge Union. The British Legion was asked to manufacture the poppies and take the proceeds but it refused – it thought the white poppies were an insult to the memory of those who died in the war. Controversial stuff.
