Whats fun about India?
You might be asking yourself, “what does one read in Sanskrit? Is it really worth the time?” The answer is that, contrary to popular belief, there is more to world history and culture than Greece and Rome can account for. Epic and romantic poetry were at their height in India sometime in the first millennium A.D.** Many historically significant, technically complicated and spiritually moving works were created in that time. For example, the Mahabharata contains many sub-stories which have become cultural standards today. One of the most famous is the Bagavad-Gita which is as universal as anything written in Latin or Greek. Another famous work that some of you may be familiar with is the Kama Sutra. For all you classicists out there (all three of you), you know the joy of reading a text in the original, as well as discovering a culture through its literature. Now imagine that with a whole new culture, one that will take you farther and show you poetic language like you’ve never imagined
