The difference between columns, jokes, and songs isn’t the work. I’ve written an entire column in the time that it took to perfect a good joke. I’ve also taken longer to write a single line in a song than it takes to write a whole column. The difference is their rhythm. A column will have a different rhythm than a joke. Both will have a beginning, middle and an end, but obviously the column gives you more room to explore and expand. A joke has to be concise. Songs have their own rhythm, too. And obviously, they’ll often rhyme. The trick is not getting them all mixed up and writing jokes that rhyme and columns that are broken up into stanzas. Ever have writer’s block? If so, how do you get over it? My trick is to get away from the work for awhile. Say two weeks in Hawaii. Just kidding. I haven’t ever done that. Not yet anyway. But I will go for a drive or do something else. It’s amazing how many times the right line will come to me as soon as I get my mind on something else. How do you
