Whats difference between Chinese Mandarin and Taiwanese Mandarin?
The two varieties of Mandarin spoken in the two regions are basically the same, but with minor regional differences. First off, the ethnic/linguistic situation in Taiwan is rather complex with about 70% of the population from the Hoklo group who are bilingual in Mandarin and Taiwanese (Taiwanese Minan) and about 15% of the population from the Hakkas who are either bilingual or trilingual (Hakka, Mandarin, and Taiwanese). Around 12% of the population are from the mainland, and it is this group that made Mandarin the official language of Taiwan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwan#Demo… I had a Mandarin instructor from Taiwan, and she spoke impeccable Mandarin because of her mainland family background plus the schooling. Yet I’ve noticed that some of my friends from Taiwan had an accent that does not distinguish between /shi/ /chi/ /zhi/ and /si/ /ci/ /zi/ hence merging the two trio of 6 sounds into 3. Unfortun
