Whats difference bet genetic engineering & protein engineering?
Genetic engineering is simple words is a field of recombinant DNA technology (broadly) where we try to manipulate the gene sequences of a plant, animal or organism by inserting a specific gene(s) of interest and make them express them( generally these gene products can be of therapeutic value) like hormones, growth factors, enzymes etc etc for commercial exploitation. While Protein engineering is a very young discipline of science which aims at generating proteins of interest in a large scale and inexpensive way. One way is by studying in detail the protein sequences in silico and understand the way they fold, behave (depending on the folding they can be hydrophobic or hydrophillic). This method is called rational design. directed evolution is another strategy where one can play around with the genes and by creating random mutations generate various mutants and study the favorable ones or reshuffle the gene variants and observe the products which can behave in a total new and acceptabl
